The following is a great quote from Thomas A. Stuart of Fortune back in February that I found is the central tenet of trading:

Risk--let's get this straight upfront--is good. The point of risk management isn't to eliminate it; that would eliminate reward. The point is to manage it--that is, to choose where to place bets, where to hedge bets, and where to avoid betting altogether...the goal is to maximize the gains from the risks you take.

That page from the February 7, 2000 issue of Fortune is taped to my wall to remind me constantly of the need to take risks, but also, of the the need to manage one's risk in trading.
