Ahh...old Halliburton hands. I knew one in West Africa once who said "When I joined Halliburton 25 years ago I had $15 in my pocket, and if I ever get it again, I'll quit the sons of bitches." Investing in B&C is not a bad strategy for niche investors. The dearth of qualified (experienced) drillers, toolpushers, and company men will mean that the subtle warning signs of an impending well control problem will sometimes go un-noticed - until it's too late, that is. You can only do so much with sophisticated instrumentation. The ability to draw on experience and winnow out the real well control situations from the red herrings takes a good bit of experience. Is the well flowing? Is it U-Tubing or ballooning? At $10,000/hour for the rig's spread cost, the drilling superintendent back in the office will want to think it's nothing serious - so keep coming on out of the hole... Either way - with more and more older wells with chronic casing pressure, less and less qualified personnel - that spells more work for well control specialists. Good luck with Boots & Coots.
