I agree that we can debate forcefully as liberals. But our arguments will always seem best to us, because we want to live in the kind of world that our ideas would create. Same goes for Conservatives. There can never be any rapprochement between these two poles. There is a fundamental difference in world view. Just as a Catholic and a Jew are never going to agree on religion- liberals and conservatives will never agree on political ways and means. They may, occasionally, make the odd bedfellow, but seldom, I think, for the same reason.

For that reason I don't see what good it would be to debate side by side. I've been debating my issues for years on SI. I know what my arguments are. I think I've seen every conservative rejoinder. Now I don't mind a bit if you pick topics- I don't even mind if they are the same topics as the other thread- but since I've been there, done that and got the T-shirt as far as the conservative arguments go, I would never read their thread. I simply can't stand it anymore- and there will be more than enough conservative glop to read in the news for the next four years.
