This may be slightly off topic, but I am curious how big a role Atmel will play in Gemplus smart cards. A poster on the Atmel thread suggested that the ``Gemplus'' brand GemCore® Lite integrates the T8xC5101 8-bit microcontroller from Atmel. Do you know if this is correct? Is the GemCore lite the entire line of Gemplus or are there other cards that use Philips and Infineon chips instead? Also, below is a Red Herring article on Atmel that has a paragraph referring to smart cards:

Snip:To that end, one of the more rapidly growing aspects of Atmel's business is making integrated circuits (ICs) for smart cards. Smart cards have yet to take off in the United States, but they are a significant growth opportunityfor Atmel in Europe, where they are much more prevalent. Sales from smart card ICs totaled $50 million in 1999, but Mr. Rothdeutsch expects revenue in this segment to total about $100 million in 2000 and $400 million in 2001.

I am unclear whether the 400 million in sales for year 2001 refers to IC sales to the entire smart card industry from all IC vendors or refers to IC sales strictly from Atmel to the smart card industry. Sounds like a very impressive growth trajectory regardless.

Best, Huey
