I don't specifically remember when the numbers declined this much, sorry. It also predates my most handy database which only goes back to '94.

My guess would be the same as yours, mid 80's.

One note on this subject, note that most all of the car sales data focus on the domestic auto companies. Thus, market share losses to the imports can sometimes distort the data.

As I've looked into this past month's data a little deeper, I note that the US automakers lost 6 points of market share, a pretty big number. The numbers don't look quite so bad in this light, although they're still bad.

And to one of Mary's points, the US automakers' domestic market share is now at 61.4%, which is an all time low.
