Red Hat would be interesting. But the Corel "purchase" also addresses the EU complaint against office application competition. Don't forget that the company that MSFT killed with office was WordPerfect, who sold to Novell, who dumped it at a huge loss to Corel. (Yes they killed Boreland who sold Quatro to Wordperfect (along w/ 1 M licenses for Paradox which never seemed to get used up.) Yes they also wounded Lotus (Ami Pro, Symphony, and 1-2-3). MSFT killed DR(USR) DOS, and OS2 (ok IBM might have killed OS2 without the help due to ineptness).

Your very wise suggestion:

My position remains, MSFT was buying legal insurance. If Corel could provide them with some useful programming, then that is a bonus. It also forces them to devote efforts to supporting the .NET initative. The moment when MSFT started to defeat Apple was when more software developers based their development effort on that platform. Draw is one of those tools that people who want it will buy the platform it performs best or near best on (Killer App?). This addresses that issue.
