ROY, Utah--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 2, 1997--Iomega Corp. (NYSE:IOM) today announced that global shipments of its award-winning Zip drive reached six million during May 1997.
With more than six million Zip drives shipped worldwide since March 1995, the Zip drive's ramp rate is among one of the fastest growing consumer electronics products in history. Selling at a suggested street price of $149 (U.S.), the Iomega Zip drive offers an affordable personal storage solution for today's powerful multimedia computers.
"The shipment of our 6 millionth drive provides further evidence that the Zip drive is quickly gaining acceptance as the successor to the floppy," said Ted Briscoe, general manager, personal storage division at Iomega Corporation. "Recent partnerships with PC manufacturers confirm that the importance of the built-in Zip drive is extending beyond the consumer to the corporate desktop. Whether used for digital imaging, Internet applications or to simply transport files, it has become clear that an alternative to the floppy is becoming critical for today's computers."
In addition to today's announcement of six million Zip drives shipped, Iomega has reached a number of major milestones contributing to the Zip drive's emergence as the new personal removable storage standard, including:
- adoption of the Zip drive in MMX and Pentium-based PCs from top selling desktop computer vendors worldwide, including Apple, Compaq, Dell, Gateway, Hewlett-Packard, IBM, Micron, Motorola, Packard Bell NEC, Power Computing, Sony, UMAX and Unisys;
- bootable A:drive capability;
- availability of the Zip drive in over 7,500 storefronts worldwide;
- introduction of an internal ATAPI Zip drive based on industry specifications, offering an easier and more affordable solution for PC manufacturers, system integrators and value-added resellers;
- expected availability of a notebook Zip drive in the second half of 1997;
- strategic licensing agreements with NEC and Matsushita Communication Industrial Co. Ltd.
Iomega's Zip disks provide 70 times the capacity of traditional floppy disks at 20 times the speed, giving consumers unlimited capacity in 100MB increments, increased flexibility and a built-in backup system. Fast enough to run business and multimedia applications, the Zip drive brings a new dimension of flexibility to today's powerful personal computers. Iomega's Zip tools software, also included with the drive, makes it easy for consumers to manage, share and save their information.
Zip drives and Zip disks are available through VARs, resellers, system integrators, distributors and retailers.
