Riddle me this- look at an employee register of 40 years ago- pick any industry with white collar professionals- now look at a register for that same industry today. Or, if you prefer, look at any college 40 years ago, look at the make-up (by ethnicity and gender) and look at the same college today.
While we are not equal (and never will be, imo, since there is no biological equivalency between male and female) we have come very far in a very short space of time. My GRANDMOTHER remembers getting the VOTE. My mother remembers being guided into teaching college because that was what women "did" if they were going to work. I remember that the sky was the limit. These are changes, and they are big changes. Is sexism still there? Yes and it always will be- because men are never going to be able to get over the fact that they are aroused by women, and women are never going to be able to get over the fact that they want to have children- and most of them want them sired by actual men.
I do not know what world you are living in where you look through a glass darkly. It isn't the world I see. We have a great many problems- but not acknowledging "progress" (because I DO see the move toward equality as progress) doesn't make you happy, does it? You might as well take some strength and succor from the things that move your way. And if you do not, if you deny progress even where it clearly exists, how rational will you appear? Not very. Will people take you seriously when you are rational, assuming that you are, at times, rational? Perhaps not. |
