Verizon-backed Cellco Partnership remains the biggest spender, offering a total of 4.06 billion for 27 licenses. The carrier -- the country's largest with 27.5 million subscribers -- has already nailed at least 10 megahertz of spectrum in 13 of the 15 top markets, and 20 megahertz in coveted New York, Los Angeles and Boston regions. AT&T-backed Alaska Native Wireless follows Verizon, and bid a total of $2.87 billion. Cingular Wireless-funded Salmon PCS follows ANW , and bid $2.19 billion by the end of the 27th round. Big city market bidding has slowed, and analysts at Salomon Smith Barney say they expect the sale to continue through mid-month as companies focus on smaller markets. The firm expects the auction to bring the FCC and the federal government between $15 and $20 billion. << Other High Bidders include DCC (Dobson), VoiceStream, et al. ALLTEL, CFW, Cincinnati Bell and Nextel Have dropped out of bidding. Auction appears to be winding down quickly.
