Not by a long shot. A couple years ago it was nil. Me and a couple other people<ggg>. There were only 2.21 million cable modem subscribers *worldwide* at the end of 1999 (source: Instat). A high percentage of those were using proprietary modems.

Below are subscriber numbers for the top 7 MSOs (2.74 million cable modem subs at end of Q300), which is about 80% of the total. I don't have a breakdown of how many are DOCSIS vs. proprietary. Final 2000 numbers won't be available for a couple months yet, but recent projections call for a shade over 4 million total subs in North America at the end of 2000. You have to look carefully when you read these numbers because they can be broken down in dozens of different ways across regions and by modem type and by MSO concentrations. Often times the press doesn't describe what the numbers really are, except to call them "cable modem subscribers." This makes it very confusing in trying to compare apples to apples. Hope this helps.
