Quite the contrary. Alpha had a weak customer base, a weak software base, was non industry standard, was unavailable in high volumes and DEC was not developing future fab processes to support it. Much like AMD's current position. Athlon has a weak software base for their 3D-Never, a non existent software base for their 64 bit dreams, the highend is unavailable in volume and they are delaying their new fab process.
