<<<"...I kinda-sorta-mostly agree with you Diana, but the concern is for the extreme. Surely you'd agree that murder, even in the private confines of the home, is a criminal offense deserving of gov't involvement. ...">>>

No, I wouldn't agree. People killing each other inside a family is private stuff, imho.
----I know this attitude seems odd to most people.

Why would you want potential gvrnmnt intrusion into your family in Any way?
--The idea that you & I are saved from murder by our families only by their fear of gvrnmnt retribution is laughable. But we are all influenced profoundly by the insidious presence of gvrnmnt in our homes and our private lives.
---A good trade, do you think? I don't think it is. I'd rather take my chances that my family will murder me and have the gvrnmnt keep out of my family relationships and my home.
---We are so accustomed to this gvrnmnt intrusiveness that it seems natural.

In other places/centuries we would also feel/have felt the watchful eyes of the priests on our families and private lives. They would have said that without them there to watch over us we would be prey to Evil Forces.
---Come to think of it, that's really a better con than "You need us to protect you from your family."

diana
