Japan Stocks: Nikkei ends AM up 1.6% on short-covering

Futures World News - January 04, 2001 21:36

By Mai Iida

Tokyo--Jan. 5--The Nikkei 225 Stock Average ended 1.6% higher Friday
morning as dealers moved to cover short positions in high priced high tech
sector issues following four consecutive days of falling. Future-led
buying also supported the gains as the Federal Reserve's decision to
approve more discount rate cut led players' expectation that downside risk
in the U.S. stocks to be limited, traders said. The Nikkei rose 219.84 points, or
1.6%, to 13,911.33.
