C-Cube DVD&MORE(TM) Enables Market's First Combination DVD Player and A/V Recorder
New Manufacturing Kit Enables Lowest Cost Optical Disc Multimedia Recording Solutions
MILPITAS, Calif., Jan. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- C-Cube Microsystems Inc. (Nasdaq: CUBE - news) today introduced DVD&MORE(TM) (Multiformat Optical Recording Entertainment), a manufacturing kit that enables OEMs to quickly develop dual-deck optical disc players that combine MPEG video and CD audio recording capability with state of the art DVD playback. Products based on DVD& MORE will, for the first time, give users the ability to easily create custom audio and video content.

``DVD&MORE combines innovative A/V recording features to top quality DVD players, enabling products that feature high quality digital video and audio recording along with DVD playback,'' said Jim Chase, senior product marketing manager at C-Cube. ``DVD&MORE allows OEMs to quickly develop unique, differentiated digital recording solutions for end users at an unprecedented value, bringing a true multimedia experience to the consumers' living room.''

Enabling a New Class of Products

The DVD&MORE platform enables a new class of product, the Multimedia Disc Recorder (MDR). With both a DVD and a CD-RW drive, MDRs combine stunning DVD playback with a variety of digital recording modes. As a DVD player, DVD&MORE is a best in class system that supports VCD, S-VCD, MP3, and CD-audio playback. Based on the market leading ZiVA® family of decoder ICs, DVD&MORE supports all basic DVD player features as well as the trick modes found in high performance systems.

The DVD&MORE platform supports recording of both audio and video content to optical disc. Digital video recording to CD-R or CD-RW discs in high resolution MPEG-2 or extended length MPEG-1 formats are supported. Video can be recorded via external analog inputs or using the integrated, cable ready tuner included in the reference platform. In addition, audio CDs can be created via an external audio input. Users can also create disc-to-disc audio compilation CDs from multiple source discs. Finally, disc-to-disc backups of VCD, S-VCD, and CD audio discs can be generated using both drives simultaneously.

Apex Digital, Inc. will introduce the Apex T-1000, a new product that is based on C-Cube's DVD&MORE manufacturing kit, at the CES Show in Las Vegas, Jan. 6-9, 2001. The Apex T-1000 will be available in March 2001. Commenting on the manufacturing kit, Larry Lian, supervisor of technical support at Apex Digital, Inc. said, ``The DVD&MORE manufacturing kit gives users the ability to create custom audio and video content in their living room, without the complex interface issues of today's PC solutions.''

Includes All Elements Needed to Develop an MDR Product

DVD&MORE incorporates three C-Cube chip components. The first chip, the DVxcel® codec, is a fourth generation, real-time MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 digital video encoder. DVxcel's high quality encoding with pre-filtering generates superb recording images. The second C-Cube chip, ZiVA®-HGi, integrates a 32-bit RISC CPU and an advanced multiplane graphics engine. A flicker filter provides crisp text and graphics display on TV screens for a sharp user interface and easy on-screen programming and set-up control. The third chip, ZiVA-4, is the world's largest selling DVD decoder IC and performs MPEG decode and display functions for DVD and CD-R/RW recorded discs.

The DVD&MORE manufacturing kit includes all hardware and software elements necessary for an OEM to quickly develop an MDR product. Software modules provide video recording, audio recording, timer/tuner control, song compilation, backup disk creation, and playback control functions. The on-screen user interface is easily configurable to support international markets. Additionally, C-Cube provides complete designs for the analog I/O board, power supply, front panel, and remote control and all documentation needed for an OEM to quickly go to mass production.

Availability

The DVD&MORE Digital Video Recorder reference platform is available now. C-Cube will be demonstrating DVD&MORE at the Consumer Electronics Show in the Las Vegas Convention Center, Booth TBD, from January 6-9, 2001.
