Germany's Technical inspection department [TUV] is also very stringent compared to the U.S. but I couldn't say they overdue it as there are many-many older cars on the road. The after market is very good probably because cars are always kept in good working order... the 'junkers' we see on the street are a source of amusement for German tourists in this country. You also don't have to worry about your car getting abused, so people have no problem parking nice cars out on the street.
