Hi Charley,

Eminem has been the first white artist to take rap and R&B and transform the rhythms into something more complex, less informed by the ghetto culture which rap grew out of. Vanilla Ice tried this about ten years ago, but IMO he was primarily a music business creation and simply copied black rap style at the time.

Eminem's lyrics are deliberately provocative and offensive, like early rap, though one of his primary targets has been his own mother. Have you ever listened to "Will the Real Slim Shady Please Stand Up". That's the kind of rythmic innovation that music critics highlight when they talk about it's music.
