Penn is definitely not a football power.

Actually, it depends who you ask. They have won two Ivy titles in a row, dammit, and their QB, a transfer from Northwestern, won Player of the Year. But they were definitely no powerhouse. Columbia played them even for a half, Princeton had them 24-6 at half and lost 40-24, Brown lost 41-38 in the strangest finish since that Cal-Stanford band game (largely because the Brown coach pulled an Allie Sherman), and Harvard could easily have won their 36-35 game.

Still, Penn made the most of their luck and they did have the best athletes in the league, such as it is. In my day, Princeton had a team ranked in the top 15 in the whole country. The league peaked with Marinaro, which was about the same time most of the schools went co-ed. But who would you want to sit next to in English Lit? Some no-neck monster or Brooke Shields?
