I wasn't thinking about Eminem so much as what are middle class suburban white kids doing emulating black rap stars that are emulating - or are actually part of - black jailbird culture? And no, I am not saying all blacks are jailbirds - this thing about the pants hanging down so you can see the underwear is because in jail they take away your belt. The baseball caps black guys wear in prison so their hair won't get messed up when they are working on the prison farms. It's just so perverse.

I guess it's not any sicker than Jean Genet or Charles Bukowski but those guys were waaaay out there - they've never been part of mainstream culture. The pose of artist as rebel isn't a new gimmick, but when the rebel becomes accepted by the mainstream usually they've been cleaned up - like Marlon Brando pretending to be a biker in Rebel Without A Cause.
