"U.S. Rotary Rigs Down 7, Canada Up 167"

NEW YORK, Jan 5 (Reuters) - The number of rigs exploring for oil and natural gas in the United States fell by seven to 1107 during the week ending January 5, according to oil services firm Baker Hughes Inc.(NYSE:BHI - news).
A year ago there were 786 rigs operating in the United States.
The number of rigs in Canada, gaining by people coming back from holidays, rose 167 to 489, compared to a year ago at 404.
In the Gulf of Mexico, the number of rigs searching for oil and gas rose 16 to 161, compared to 123 last year.
The number of U.S. rigs searching for oil rose 10 to 244, while the number of rigs searching for gas fell 17 to 862. There was one miscellaneous rig, unchanged from last week.
The number of U.S. rigs exploring on land fell 19 to 918, while the number of rigs operating offshore rose 16 to 167. The number of rigs in inland waters fell four to 22.
There were 262 U.S. rigs exploring directionally, up two; 60 exploring horizontally, up three; and 785 exploring vertically, down 12.
The states with the largest changes in their rig counts were Louisiana, which fell four to 213, and Oklahoma and Wyoming, which both fell three to 137 and 46 respectively.
The weekly rig count reflects the number of rigs exploring for oil and gas, not those producing oil and gas.
