There needs to be a big panic-selling move down, followed by a relatively long period of consolidation at a significantly lower level before I think stocks can rally in a meaningful way.

I personally do not think the FED (or the govt) would allow this scenerio to happen, as you can see they are going to pump more liquidity into market. There's absolutely no reason for the good and strong fundamentals of the US economy to go further down the drain. Consolidation is here around 2000-3000 of the Nasdaq IMO. I also do not see why there's no meaningful way to rally from here on. If someone wants a capitulation day, fine. But if they are looking for a 2 years or more of recession, I would think they are just fighting against the FED.
