So many people are killed by their own relatives or acquaintances. I will try to find the numbers for murders by family intimates, versus uses of a gun for protection. Now I suppose your acquaintance could knife you- but that takes more physical contact, it takes more skill, and I would think it is less likely to happen on impulse if only because we are programmed by the media to see impulsive violent behavior as mainly gun related. So we, as a society, probably act that out.
