Taiwan's stock index to surge 40%-50% in 12 months: UBS Warburg

Taipei, Jan. 4, 2001 (CENS)--UBS Warburg Securities has recommended its clients to increase their portfolios of Taiwan stocks, predicting share prices of the local stocks are likely to climb 40%-50% within the next 12 months.

In its report on investment strategy for the first quarter of 2001, the renowned securities house said the benchmark index of the local bourse has slid to an extremely lower level, therefore, urging investors to build up fresh positions on Taiwan stocks.

The latest rate cuts by the U.S. Federal Reserve will play the key role as a booster to push up share prices in the region, UBS Warburg said in the report.

It predicted that the highest point for the local bourse this year is likely to hit 7500 points.

The securities giant recommended snapping up financial shares as this segment of the market is to benefit mostly from the Fed's rate cuts.

Other issues which should merit investment include companies engaging in telecommunications, energy, technology and industrial raw materials.
