I'd like the time to digest your last two posts, Mike. But as a knee jerk to something that you just stated:
"... focus on promoting competition between the winners in access-HFC and twisted pair. To heck with everything else. These three are the access winners so leave it at that. Don't keep trying to regulate other winners into the picture."
The big three sectors you mentioned appear to be leading the pack purely on the basis of privilege and default, IMO, and most importantly, despite themselves. All of them have stepped on the backs of others in the past, including the ILECs in the earlier part of the cent... er, last century. It's time that they, too, learned how to put on a pair of shoulder guards now. Don't get me wrong. FTTH'ers and wireless miracle makers, too, will some day be labeled by yet future bleading edge advocates as bums.
But there is a chasm of opportunity between now and then, during which time I think that we will begin to see some real innovation and improvements to the products and services we've grown accustomed to (waiting for, in part), i.e., those being provided by today's "winners."
There are many parallels that can be drawn between the fairness issues you've raised in the residential market and similar issues which were fought over for ten years in the commercial space. In the latter, exponential gains were fostered in metro areas in the commercial sector. As some prime examples, MFNX, and its predecessors - Teleport and MFS - have changed the way telecoms services are traded among carriers and subscribers, alike, in the larger markets.
Although, these last two who I mentioned, TCG and MFS, did not exactly fill the same roles as MFN (MFN selling dark, and the others selling lit).
I should note here, as a corollary to another recent post upstream concerning MFN [#1656], that both TCG and MFS have been bought out by two larger players. ATT and MCIW, respectively. Both of those are Interexchange carriers. Perhaps when VZ gets their interstate wings fully developed they will make a more deliberate move towards MFN.
