Ashcroft's real "sin" is opposing Roe v. Wade - and his opposition to affirmative action, to a lesser extent, as well. If you oppose affirmative action, you must be a racist, so the logic goes. And if you oppose Roe v. Wade, you must be anti-woman.

If we let them frame the debate that way, then we're always playing catchup.
