I spent 18 months developing an application in Java; I understand both the technical and marketing benefits and difficulties. I am a big fan of the Java technology and the technical benefits (so you don't need to read me the Bible on these!), but technology doesn't drive a complete shift in the corporate office software market unless Microsoft stands still. It isn't happening (see for example, Microsoft's Zero Windows Administration hype) and won't happen.

IMO, Java will succeed in the non- "office productivity" applications. Virus checking s/w is a great example (automatic executable and virus signature updates), tax software (automatic updates for tax law changes); areas where Microsoft is not dominant.
