Arun,

OK, since we're having a gentlemanly discussion re: the future of 3G, you take the pro side, I'll take the against.

Here's one, and a pretty big one, imho.

No killer app yet exists that MUST be used on a 3G network because a 2G or 2.5G network is not capable.

Email, SMS, location position services, web access, etc. are all capabilities handled with todays networks.

If no killer apps are developed, what will motivate carriers to invest in 3G networks?

In other words what will make a 3G handset a 'must have' for a consumer?

You may suggest the ability to download mp3's, or quickly accessing a map, or a faster web access experience.

I don't think those qualify as the killer app, though.

The killer app for 1 and 2G is obvious - having the ability to communicate with anyone, nearly anywhere...untethered.

What will it be in the 3G world that 2G networks won't already be able to handle?

Verve

BTW, this is merely an analytical exercise...not trying to inflame.
