You can blame animal rights activists for this sort of thing. Your local science fair has no real choice. It wants to send its best projects on to the state fairs and the state fairs want to send the best on to the national. The national, because of pressure from animal rights groups places nasty requirements on the state fairs and requires them to place the same requirements on their feeder fairs- -the local fairs. Because of these requirements, many interesting experiments simply cannot be done- -at least not for science fair projects.
And, as you found out, experiments involving animals require approval in advance and adult supervision.

Can you or he PM me the results? This particular theory- -that color vision was lost in the orders above insecta and not regained until birds and the primates- -has always seemed fishy to me,
