It is wonderful when a mentor takes such trouble with you. I will keep a look out for his work! I do not mean to be obscure. The main idea in distinguishing beauty and emotional content is that beauty appeals mainly to our sense of design. There must be enough variety to sustain interest, but enough "pattern" to satisfy the love of order. In music, for example, bars are written within a metric grid, but notes vary in beat, there is syncopation, and there are changes of tempo. You can always beat out the time, and yet there is continual variety and surprise. When using the word "existential", I mean that there are themes which tend to persist merely because we are human beings with a common situation in the world, despite ethnic and individual differences in coping with them. The reason I say that existential validity rather than strict morality is the appropriate criterion for a work that moves us is that we are capable of appreciating works that we may find dubious in crucial respects, for example,in their politics or religious premises. This suggests that we are more concerned with the honesty and depth of treatment of the themes than with the precise "message" of the work.
