i have used the desktop too this way. and rather than toss the files in recycle bin (though there's no denying that that may be a fine place for them), it's also convenient to create a new folder on the desktop (right-click desktop, choose 'new', then 'folder') and just drag the downloaded files into the new folder.

this keeps things tidy and begins to give a novice user some experience with basic file management stuff (personally not one of my stronger suits).
