Rick, perhaps you will address the difference between ^BTK and ^DRG.

"Teach him what ^BTK is, that it's an average of mostly OPERATIONAL companies, not research boutiques. These companies produce DRUGS, and are therefore relatively recession-strong."

It's my impression that the big OPERATIONAL companies are in the ^DRG, e.g., MRK, LLY, JNJ, PFE, etc. I thought the ^BTK stocks are the RESEARCH-heavy group, e.g., SEPR et al. AMGN is the only company that the two indices have in common.
