"The Blue Laser Diode" The Book by Shuji Nakamura, Stephen Pearton and Gerhard Fasol
(Springer-Verlag, Second revised Edition, Oct. 2000):

(Chapter 2 describes a lot about the general background of Nakamura's inventions, and the whole book is a
detailed technical description. If you read this book, you should at least in principle be able to replicate
Nakamura's inventions in your own lab (the emphasis is on "in principle" - it won't be easy...))

Summaries of the technical breakthroughs and background are in the following SCIENCE articles:

SCIENCE-Magazine: "Longer Life for the Blue Laser":

sciencemag.org (Full article, requires SCIENCE subscription)

SCIENCE-Magazine: "Room-Temperature Blue Gallium Nitride Laser Diode"
