Neo, I have a winner in the best films seen over the weekend category and it is, (drum roll please), "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon." This is a film of really transcendent beauty. There is one scene involving a long shot of a hillside bamboo forest blowing gently in a breeze that finally gave me a framework for realizing that much Chinese art contains representative evocations of lush landscapes that didn't resemble anything else I had ever seen.

The acting is superb, the script (though subtitled) is by turns moving and powerful (though somewhat melodramatic) and the action sequences are the best I've ever seen. And though it's not a chick flick in the classic sense, it features a love story at its core that is really quite touching. It's also a "conservative" movie in the sense that it venerates honor and loyalty in preference to self-gratification.

I'd really recommend seeing this in the theatres because the cinematography is world class and it adds a real depth to the production to see it on a big screen.
