I'm not sure this is your problem but are different versions of excel being used. Later versions of excel can read earlier versions but not vice versus, ie excel 2000 can read a file made in excel 97 but not the other way around. If the file was made on the later version it will have to be saved in a format that the earlier version can decipher.
