Bank withdraws $1m Elan libel suit
NICK WEBB

Credit Suisse First Boston (CSFB) has withdrawn a $1m libel suit against a retired scientist who had slammed the US investment bank's coverage of Irish pharmaceutical giant Elan.

No money changed hands in the settlement last week, according to court papers lodged in a New York Federal Court. The scientist, Chuan Chang of New Jersey, agreed not to make any false statements about CSFB or its Elan analyst David Maris. In return CSFB has dropped the case. Three other suits against fellow Internet message board users were also dropped.

CSFB had accused Chang and 10 other bulletin board commentators of defaming the firm by posting disparaging remarks about analyst David Maris on a Yahoo message board. The postings had lashed Maris's bearish analysis of Elan.

Among the numerous allegedly defamatory messages on the message board were ones comparing Maris to "a monkey throwing darts". Other messages suggested that he was seeking to depress the stock to benefit investors who were betting that the share price would fall.
