The National Post reports in its Saturday edition that World Heart has again pushed back the date for the first human implant of its permanent artificial heart, the fifth time in the last 18 months it has backed away from a target. The Post's Ian Jack writes that chief executive Rod Bryden insisted on Friday that the Ottawa-based company will go ahead with a clinical trial by the end of 2001. "We're feeling very good about where the product is," he says. "We're highly confident in the second half." Mr. Bryden says there is nothing wrong with the artificial heart, but that it has become clear the preclinical trials, Health Canada approval and finding a donor will almost certainly not be complete by midyear. The company said it ended 2000 with cash resources to finance operations into 2002, and with cash and short-term investments totalling about $46-million. Mr. Bryden is the owner of the Ottawa Senators hockey team.
