Actually, they do... here in the State of Florida, we have the Baker Act which allows a law enforcement officer to detain and transport the individual to a mental health residential facility for three days' observation... the prerequisite for the Baker Act is that the individual recognizes that he/she is a danger to himself or others and would like some help... if they do not want help, they walk... mere recognition of being a risk to society is not enough, but if the police witness a threatening act, then the Baker Act can be enforced... if a crime is also committed, an arrest is also made and the subject is then transported to jail, to be followed by a mental health assessment during his/her incarceration..... the Baker Act is a complicated one, and my brief summary doesn't cover all the subtle points of the law here... but it is a good law, and I'm glad we have it, otherwise these people would fall through the cracks, commit crimes, and cost the community far more grief down the road.....
