Without the leadership of the United States and the US Economy there would never be a future for the rest of the 3rd world at all. It is pretty ironic to say that slavery in communist china is good (12 cents and hour WTO/CHINA FREE TRADE AGREEMENTS etc) and then to say that these nations deserve a better standard of living. Sounds like the colonialist model to me all over again. Xenophobia anyone? Why can't these countries be left to develop their own culture at their own pace, why must we force super fast over industrialization on them all, do we really want 1.2 billion chinese to drop their bikes and start driving gas guzzling autos? Take a deep breath and think of the long term, I know anything beyond years is hard for American minds to grasp, but not every culture is on a 5 year cultural and poliical cycle like our own, and we should respect that, despite demands from Communist Tyrant Slave Masters to give them THE MONEY to continue to enslave their people into the indefinite future. If you really beleive what you are saying, then you should be for a INTERNATIONAL MINIMUM WAGE which would protect US Labor and also really create capitalist workers in communist slave labor factories and 3rd world military sweat shops. Greenspan shares your global welfare view, and that is why the Federal Reserve Interest Rate hikes have only helped 3rd world asian dictators and corrupt asia bankers....have we forgotten the "good intentions" of Alan Greenspan thatpaved this path to hell...have we forgotten his congressional hearings about trying to institute change in credit laws internationally so that multinationals could collect bad debts in 3rd world mostly asian corrupt banking nations? His problem is that his liberal sleeves did not wait for those REFORMS instead he just bolted ahead with interest rate hikes, adding fuel to the fire. Learn from Dieter Zetsche CEO of DaimlerChrysler who is cutting production to classically cut over supply of auto inventorys in order toa chieve price stability, you can not out race recessionary interest rates any other way. As to what could have been: yes the creation of wealh did not have to be destroyed, the nature of human labor is to put things together that have a greater value than the raw materials they came from, and that means that yes, unlike your supposition, I do beleive that sustainable wealth creation can and SHOULD continue indefinitely, that we all should become wealthier, even millionares. It beats the Slavery Model of working to become poorer. SLAVERY ANYWHERE IS SLAVERY EVERYWHERE.
