something that must held in common in order for the diverse cultures to meet and interact?

Mostly a desire to meet and a level of confidence that interaction will not be met with hostility. The rest of the mixing of cultures will take place as part of a learning process.

Things like a common language, common historical references, and common handwaving traits can be usefull but are hardly necessary. The more differences there are the more need there will be for a "translator" group of cross cultural venturers. I think it is no accident that past civilizations are considered to be at their peak when they are actively engagued with new regions and new peoples and decline as they get conservative and lose that dynamic.
