Why would people want anything other than a floppy disk camera?

Capacity, mainly. Floppies hold only a fraction of what Smartmedia or CompactFlash can hold. If you have to continually swap out floppies because you can't take more than 1 (2,3, whatever) pictures at a time the price advantage can be more than offset by the sheer inconvenience of it all.
