BellSouth: DSL Web Customers to Triple

ATLANTA (Reuters) - Regional phone company BellSouth Corp. (NYSE:BLS - news) said
on Tuesday it had topped its 2000 goal for high-speed Internet customers and planned to
triple subscriber numbers this year.

The company said in a statement that it had reached more than 215,000 digital subscriber line (DSL)
customers last year in 46 markets. BellSouth's goal had been 200,000 subscribers.

DSL services provide high-speed Internet connections over conventional copper telephone wires.

BellSouth said it planned an ``aggressive rollout plan'' aimed at meeting its goal of tripling subscribers to
600,000 in 63 markets this year.

BellSouth shares were up $1-13/16 at $43-3/8 in early afternoon New York Stock Exchange trading.
