"Linda Chavez to Hold News Conference
Tuesday

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Linda Chavez (news -
external web site), whose nomination as labor secretary
in President-elect George W. Bush (news - web sites)'s
cabinet is threatened by controversy over an illegal alien
who once lived in her home, is expected to make an
announcement later on Tuesday, Chavez's son said.

Chavez is expected to hold a news conference at 4 p.m.
EST in Washington over the issue, said her son, David
Gersten.

``It is an announcement but we are making absolutely no
comment on what that announcement will be,'' said
Gersten, when asked whether Chavez planned to
announce her intention to withdraw from her nomination
for the cabinet post.

Controversy erupted over her nomination last weekend
when it was revealed that an illegal immigrant had lived in the Chavez home in
Bethesda, Maryland, from 1991 to 1993 and that she had been given money
by Chavez periodically.

Bush said on Monday he stood by his choice for labor secretary and a
spokesman for the president-elect said Chavez had taken in the Guatemalan
woman as an act of charity and not as an employee in her home."
