dangerous to become an "embalmed culture",

It is also dangerous to mistake abundance for diversity. The many monestaries of medieval Europe may have contained sufficient knowledge and information for great transformations. What was lacking was an embrace of change, instead the cultures Byzantine and European favored tradition and caste. It was not until the eastern christains were forced to assimilate did a Renaissance and Reformation begin.

Hundreds of years of progess and culture were lost during that time because an elite was allowed into power which thought it had the truest and best answer to life's activities. The intellectual concept that one best idea exists is predicate for the ruin of a culture.
