Well I had this argument about Catholic Doctrine recently with a family member who is (as am I) Irish, Catholic and Democratic (well we share the first two anyway). He was excoriating Bush's record in Texas on executions and using John Paul II's criticisms of capital punishment to underline how inhumane they were.

I told him that I'd be willing to accept ALL of our Catholic Doctrine as a basis for public morality by eliminating capital punishment in trade for a prohibition of abortion. I also asked whether that was trade he'd be willing to make. Shut him down rather quickly as you might imagine.

On the whole, I think that was more than just an opportunity to score debating points and that I'd willingly make that trade of protecting innocent human life at the expense of continuing lives that were demonstrably better ended.
