Libya: Bids in for Western desert pipeline contract
Middle East Economic Digest, January 5

National Oil Corporation (NOC) and Italy's Eni plan to award by February the $1,000 million engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract for the onshore Wafa gas Field in block NC-169. Bids were received in December from three of the four prequalifiers.

Work will include building 30-inch-diameter and 16-inch-diameter twin gas and liquid pipelines linking the field with the onshore central gas processing plant at Melitah. The plan also includes the capacity to connect previously discovered local oil and gas reserves to the Wafa network.

Consortia not awarded the Wafa package will be allowed to bid in May for the EPC contract for the Melitah gas processing facilities. The $500 million plant will eventually treat 10,000 million cubic metres a year (cm/y) of gas and condensates, 8,000 million cm/y of which is destined for export to Italy via a sub-Mediterranean pipeline.

Agip Gas, the joint venture between NOC and Eni, will operate the production and pipeline facilities, The company plans to begin delivery of gas to mainland Europe by 2003.
