Hm, maybe we can start with the areas of agreement. I'm afraid that the current war on drugs is as lost a cause as was prohibition and for much the same reasons. It's a fatalistic realization that I've made over time and I still retain the right to lock either or both of my kids in a closet and home school them if drugs ever became a serious preoccupation of either of them.

As for opposing capital punishment-I don't, in fact I support it. It's just that over the last decade I have a history of moving toward the Church's positions on nearly every significant moral issue that has confronted me and I don't rule out the possibility that I may do so once again.

As for abortion, I was strongly in favor of "a woman's right to choose" until at the time of my first child's birth I had this massive realization that I was utterly and incalculably stupid and wrong. It happened in the delivery room as I stood holding my daughter. I have no meaningful empirical distinction to make between a six versus a seven week old fetus.

I can only say in all due humility that I would probably never have achieved that awareness were it not for the revelation of life that was given to me by my daughter's birth.
