Taking a purely evolutionary view, it depends on what one has to adapt to. In general, "adaptiveness" is not the criterion for survival or flourishing, but the suitability of one's characteristics for the emerging environment. If there were a general breakdown in the social order, gun toting ex- Marines would have an advantage over you and me. If stubborness became a strong criterion for selection, say because one had to endure a lot of hardship in order to establish a homestead, than close- minded people would be at an advantage. In an advanced economy, smart people are favored, but in a primitive economy, brawn can go a long way........
