CD-R Advantages:
CD-ROM compatibility, capacity (compared to Zip), media cost.
CD-R Disadvantages:
Speed, inital cost
Outlook: Limited life expectancy due to DVD.

Would be complimentary to Jaz in a storage hierarchy that included:

Primary Storage Device: Winchester hard disk - 3GB+
Near-Line Storage Device: Depending on user needs: High or low capacity removalbe (ie Zip or Jaz)
Backup Storage Device: Travan compatible tape drive (Ditto 3.2GB)
Archival Storage Device: CD-ROM, CD-RW.
