hi scarecrow
thanks for the kind words. you have a good memory. <g>
regarding backup software, i completely agree with cheeky kid's rec for powerquest's driveimage. i use it myself and think it's great.
with 80gb, you can partition it (using powerquest's partitionmagic) and place images on separate partitions. this method will not be effective, however, if that 80gb monster goes south and you can't access your backups.
some folks are in favor of installing a second physical hard drive in their pc's so they can keep their backups and alternate operating systems (and more) physically separate from the first hd. this is the plan that i follow.
i also like iomega's jaz drive and their 1gb disks (which, with full compression, can fit about 1.75gb per disk), but it's obvious that it's not very feasible to try to back up 80gb in 1.75gb increments.
one thing i want to go over with you....
"Whereas the Jaz drive came with a nice CD from Iomega with the OneStep Backup and OneStep Restore programs (which were very effective), Maxtor ships no software"...
this gave me cause for pause. you do know that the iomega software can be downloaded from their website by anyone, anytime, for free, right? that is to say, you can definitely use OneStep Backup and OneStep Restore programs with your new maxtor.
another great use for jaz disks is in conjunction with norton rescue utility, for creation of rescue disks. these disks saved me on one occasion not that long ago.
so i think that driveimage and partitionmagic are a terrific team. i know of at least one thread member (biggie smalls?) who is partial to symantec's ghost imaging software.
please let us know if you'd like more info, or if you have other questions. i wish you well.
:)
