China: More than 70% of SOEs return to profit

More than 70 per cent of China's 6,599 large and medium-sized SOEs that were in the red three years ago are now reporting profits, said Sheng Huaren, minister of the State Economic and Trade Commission.

He yesterday attributed the country's success in reversing the losses being made by most of its State-owned enterprises (SOEs) to an improved macro economic environment, the support of State policies and the strenuous efforts of the businesses themselves.

The industrial firms last year posted net profits of 230 billion yuan (US$27.7 billion), leapfrogging by 1.85 fold from 1997.

The situation indicates that China has basically attained its goal of introducing market-oriented modern corporate systems and bringing the majority of deficit-ridden large and medium-sized SOEs back into the black within three years, Sheng told a press conference in Beijing.
