There is plenty of evidence and links available to show that the Telecom Service providers and infrastructure vendors are going thru slow-down and new business paradigm. However, I will argue (opinions, no evidence) that this slow-down is primarily in old infrastructure, technology. Because of the new business paradigm and demand for high speed internet access, higher bandwidth- the demand for optical network elements are going to be higher. Carriers can't afford to slow-down in this area.
Companies like Lucent, Ericsson are suffering due to their exposure in the traditional infrastructure business. JDSU, Nortel, Alcatel, part of Cisco, CIEN, Corning are going to be help bring technology sector up this year, due to growth in Optical business. Nortel had problems meeting and handling the demands.
Again, in my opinion, if there is a bright spot in technology sector in 2001, it's in Optical, B2B (ITWO, ARBA) companies.
